Rental car insurance: cover, excess and exclusions

What to check in rental car insurance: coverage, excess, exclusions and additional protection. Terms depend on the specific offer.

What to check

Check covered events, who handles claims, required documents and exclusions. Comprehensive insurance and extra protection vary by offer. A full-cover label does not mean there are no exclusions.

Excess and deposit

The excess is the portion of liability defined in the terms; a deposit is security. Extra coverage does not automatically remove a deposit. Check tyres, glass, interior, keys, theft and war-risk provisions separately.

Damage

Prioritise personal safety, contact emergency services when necessary and notify the operator. Follow the contract and insurer instructions. Do not arrange repairs without permission except actions required to address immediate danger.

Extra protection: questions for your supplier

Before choosing an extra, ask what changes: excess amount, covered events or reimbursement procedure. Check whether the deposit changes, which exclusions remain and any event-reporting requirements. Similar package names can have different terms. A catalogue badge does not confirm zero liability; use the agreed conditions for the vehicle.

Rental car insurance: cover, excess and exclusions

Insurance included is a prompt to read the details, not an answer to every question. Ask what risks are covered, which excess applies and what is excluded. Glass, tyres or interior damage may have separate rules.

If additional cover is offered, find out exactly what changes. A lower excess does not automatically remove the deposit. Keep the incident instructions and supplier contact.

Compare the rental conditions

At collection, record existing damage with the representative. That condition record does not replace insurance but helps distinguish the earlier state from changes during your rental.
